Winning the Race in China

ICI Paints is number two in the highly-competitive Chinese market and 'Dulux' is one of the most recognised names in China for decorative paint.
The business has recently launched '5 in 1', a range of 'super premium' paints that cope with walls with hairline cracks, mould, stains and dampness.
The Paints development teams in Guangzhou and Shanghai have to formulate these products for local manufacture and to meet the demands of Chinese consumers. The speed at which this has happened is a source of pride to the ICI team in Guangzhou.
"The challenge" says Enigma Xiong, who heads the team " was to achieve the required quality and consistency".
A part of the challenge, he adds, is to bring down production costs which means reformulating products for different raw materials as local sources are developed.
ICI has nearly 2,000 staff in China working at more than 30 locations. ICI Paints built its first automated production line at Song Jiang and it is one of the most sophisticated in the company.
