Sustainability in Action at ICI Paints

ICI Paints has launched a downloadable Sustainability Policy and Report which outlines our commitment to sustainable development and the promotion of responsible corporate citizenship.
The report focuses on the ICI Paints policy to conduct its business operations with integrity and with respect for the interests of all those affected by their operations.
The report also sets out in detail our sustainability policy and gives examples of our environmental performance, product supply chain successes and health and safety record. Data on related activities, including product developments and compliance with VOC regulations, reductions in CO2 emissions and innovative recycling and waste reduction schemes are also discussed.

In Brief: Some Sustainability Highlights.
VOC Compliance
ICI Paints was influential in lobbying for the introduction of VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) regulations in Europe and all our paints meet the requirements of the EU directive
2004/42/EC.
We met 2007 requirements in 2006 and we plan to meet the 2010 standards well before the deadline. ICI Paints also promotes the use of water-based substitutes, offering alternatives in all major finishes.
Biodiesel
ICI Paints has been using biodiesel in some of our delivery lorries for over 12 months. Currently 25% of our fleet mileage utilises a biodiesel fuel mixture. The primary feedstock for this biodiesel is oilseed rape, sourced, where possible, from UK farmers.
Road Traffic Accidents
In order to help us dramatically decrease the number of Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs)
occurring across a broad and diverse range of vehicle/driver profiles, ICI Paints sought a
driving trainer provider who could help deliver tangible results across all drivers on our staff in
all driving situations. Following this initiative the number of 'at fault' RTAs involving employees
driving on company business has fallen consistently each year since 1999.
The Dulux Environmental Wash System
The Dulux Environmental Wash system allows customers to wash out brushes, rollers and other painting tools in a way that minimises the impact on our environment. It converts the paint washings into clean water plus a small amount of solid waste, conserving water in the process. The Environment Agency has rated the unit as a low risk activity which means that it does not require a waste management licence.
