ICI's Stowmarket site wins prestigious award from the British Coatings Federation

The prestigious BCF Coatings Care Award for 2006 was presented to ICI Paints, Stowmarket, by Geoffrey Podger, Chief Executive of the Health and Safety Executive, Guest of Honour at the annual BCF Technical Update Seminar in Nottingham.

Other Coatings Care finalists this year were Akzo Nobel, Hull, Flint Ink, Slinford and HMG Paints, Manchester.

Peter Reick, Chairman of BCF Coatings Care Committee and MD Sonneborn & Reick and, gave a short introduction to the Coatings Care Programme and its relevance to the coatings industry?s 130 companies, ?2.2bn turnover and 15,000 employees, stressing the benefits it provides in raising HSE performance.

A key part of the programme is the tracking of performance indicators and it is these measurements, supported by site visits by the assessors, which result in the award of the annual Coatings Care trophy.

As a leading international paint business ICI Paints sells its products to over 50 million households in over 100 different countries every year, and has manufacturing facilities in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia, with its corporate headquarters in Slough.

The award judges were particularly impressed by the Stowmarket site and commented on its comprehensive and effective Health, Safety and Employment management systems which utilised BCF Guidance, as well as a range of environmental initiatives including an effective potential hazard and near miss reporting and action scheme and energy, water and waste reduction programmes.
