In Brief

July 2007

Three of the Cutty Sark Clipper Ship's boats - the Captain's Gig, the Jolly Boat and the No. 1 Lifeboat - are back to being shipshape and ready for the elements, after being refurbished using a combination of traditional methods and Dulux Trade Weathershield Yacht Varnish and Preservative Basecoat.

Both the Captain's Gig, Jolly Boat and the No. 1 Lifeboat are traditionally built 1950s replicas of the original vessels used on the Cutty Sark and date back to 1869. The Jolly Boat was extensively re-built in the 1990s and would have originally been used to take the ship's crew ashore for 'a jolly'.

All the boats are clinker built of mahogany on oak. They have been refurbished by a group of crew and volunteers who maintain the vessels and regularly sail them at events around the UK to promote the Cutty Sark's conservation project, due for completion in October 2008. The conservation programme involves restoring the structure of the ship including treating the ironwork and replacing the keel, main deck and sheathing, removing previous unsympathetic refurbishments and upgrading visitor facilities.
