ICI Reports emissions down but ?mixed? health and safety performance
July 2007
ICI has published its Sustainability Review for 2006, covering further progress in a broad range of areas in the company's sustainability performance. Last year was the first year of Sustainability Challenge 2010, the fourth of ICI's five-year programmes designed to improve sustainability performance.
The Group has been reporting on sustainability issues and performance since 1991, and since 1990, through a combination of efficiency improvement and changes in ICI's business portfolio, there have been total reductions in energy consumption of 90 per cent, greenhouse gas emissions of 96 per cent and hazardous waste to land of 97 per cent.
In 2006, ICI was on target in its Challenge 2010 objectives in the areas such as energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, hazardous waste and the release of hazardous substances to air (this was down by 27 per cent per tonne of production compared with the 2005 rate).
John McAdam, ICI Chief Executive, said: "Our safety and health performance was mixed. Work-related injuries and illnesses among employees and supervised contractors fell by ten per cent on the 2005 rate. However, we regret that there were two independent contractor fatalities in 2006 and contractor injury performance was below expectations."
A nine per cent decrease was achieved in aquatic oxygen demand, an indicator for the impact of discharges.? Water use was below target, with a small (one per cent) increase in water usage per tonne of production compared with 2005.
